I had the opportunity to go to a week long class last week. I learned about a classroom management approach called Responsive Classroom. Responsive Classroom is an approach to teaching that has been used successfully by elementary teachers around the country for over 20 years. The idea of Responsive Classroom is to create learning environments where children thrive academically, socially and emotionally. In the Responsive Classroom, the social curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum.
Responsive Classrooms emphasize teaching children to take care of themselves, each other and the school environment so that everyone can learn at his/her best. I will be using many of the ideas from this conference in my own classroom this year. I'm hoping you will notice our class paying attention to how students treat one another throughout the day. There will be a strong emphasis on students setting goals for their own learning and taking responsibility for reaching these goals.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at any point in time this year. I will continue to update you on the different aspects of Responsive Classroom as it applies to your child.
